This year’s Goodwood track day saw our biggest ever attendance, with more than 30 registered cars and drivers out on the circuit and a large selection of spectator vehicles spread all around the paddock area.
Every year more and more spectators come along – often in a wide range of different and interesting cars – and the day now has a great reputation as a relaxed event where enthusiasts gather to look at and discuss the merits of the many and various cars in attendance and the action on the track. Visitors range from those who call in for an hour or two to take part in the lunchtime parade and to see what is going on to those who stay for most of the day to enjoy the Alfa action and the huge array of cars in the paddock.
The low-key atmosphere of the day encourages everyone to mingle and check out the cars on and off the track. We welcome and encourage the more standard cars to come along and take part as there is no pressure to perform and Goodwood actively seek a non-competitive environment. Quite a number of people sign on as passengers and the hardworking Goodwood team also provides hands-on circuit instruction for those who wish to book it – making it an ideal environment for a track day novice.
Cars taking part ranged from the standard machines mentioned above through to all out racers with very experienced drivers, but everyone mixed well and enjoyed their cars on this fast and flowing circuit. You don’t need to have a high-powered machine to enjoy this wonderful track, the challenge of finding the correct lines and testing the handling limits of the car, as well as the pure pleasure of driving at such a historic circuit is enough for most!
The day started with the track surface damp, which tested the skills of those who wanted to try out the lower grip levels, but a healthy breeze and lack of any further rain soon dried off the circuit and the participants kept joining the queue for runs for the rest of the day, interrupted only by an hour’s lunch break.
The popular lunchtime parade saw over 40 Alfas, from original Giuliettas through to the latest models, take in a couple of laps behind the Goodwood Safety Car to get a feel for the circuit.
Many thanks to all those who came along, both participants and spectators, and if you missed it this year look out for the date as soon as it is announced in 2014.
