2008 Classic Alfa track day report

What a glorious day! This is the only way I can describe our third track day at Europe’s only true classic motor circuit. The sun shone all day & we had a fantastic mixture of cars & owners speeding round the same circuit layout that many of our racing heroes drove in the sixties.

We had roundtail & kammtail Spiders, more than 20 Bertone 105 Coupes of all engine sizes, 3 real GTA’s, 2 Giulietta SZs, 2 Giulia Supers, a Giulietta Sprint, a Montreal, a 1750 Berlina, a 2.0 twin-spark Gtam replica and a 3 litre V6 engined GTam replica.

Ken Beere, the owner of the 3 litre car, had just fitted our popular big brake conversion kit to his beautifully prepared car & he couldn’t believe how quickly he could approach the corners now - he finally has the brakes to match all that power!

Andrew Armitage brought along a lovely Giulia Sprint GT Veloce that has been in his family for nearly 40 years and was literally just out of a one year restoration from Gran Turismo Engineering. We are very conscious of the fact that many owners like Andrew are bringing their pride and joy to the track day and with the help of the Goodwood marshalls we do our utmost to ensure that the day is completely safe for cars and owners alike.

A number of customers came along to spectate this year (entry is free) and were very happy to see how the day was run with a strong emphasis on enjoyment and safety. Others came along just for the atmosphere with a few catching a lap or two as passengers. There is always plenty of friendly banter and shared advice in the historic settings of both the paddock and the pit lane and one comment we get year after year from delighted drivers is “what a great bunch of people”.

Paul Robinson once again brought his lovely green Montreal which performed faultlessly all day - showing how strong these cars really are if kept in regular use. He had made a few improvements to the car since last year and it was really flying.

Our own Giles Amos entertained a number of customers with runs in his track day 1750 Berlina (with 2 litre running gear) proving perhaps a little too entertaining for passenger Andy Watkins when he attempted what appeared to be a remarkable high speed reverse parking movement on exiting the chicane leaving Andy’s door about an inch from the tyre wall!

Ian Ellis & Bill Smith flew round in their lightweight fibreglass GTV’s (Plastic Pig 1 & 2!). Unfortunately Bill’s car lunched its clutch just before, er, lunch. Bill still declared he’d had a great day as the abundance of track time had enabled him to do back to back sessions straight from the 9am start. Ian had also kindly lent him PP2 for a lap or two when he wasn’t out scaring his dad with some fairly rapid sessions!

Two stunning Giulietta SZs were brought along by James Wiseman & Paul Gregory. Paul has been lucky enough to gain entry to the Mille Miglia this year in his other car - a 1956 Giulietta Sprint Veloce. We wish him well - its an amazing event.

If you’re considering coming next year and are a track-day virgin, bear in mind that nearly half of our drivers this year were novices & all said they would be back again next year. It really is a day aimed at drivers who want to enjoy their cars in a historic setting but in a safe non-competitive environment.

Photographer Ken Carrington was once again on hand taking hundreds of fantastic photos (some of which are shown here) & all participants should by now have received a selection of sample images of their car on the track. If you haven’t heard from Ken or you would like to order some photos you can contact him at this email address - ken.car@blueyonder.co.uk or on 07770 524326.

We will of course be organising a day at Goodwood again in 2009 & hope that if you have been before you’ll come again and if you have never been you’ll either come & have a look or better still book yourself in to what should be a most memorable day.
